Alcoholics Anonymous is an international fellowship of men and women who have had a drinking problem. It is nonprofessional, self-supporting, multiracial, apolitical, and available almost everywhere. There are no age or education requirements. Membership is open to anyone who wants to do something about his or her drinking problem. Visit our About AA page
The General Service Structure of Alcoholics Anonymous
Individual A.A. groups elect a General Service Representative (GSR) to represent their group conscience at the District level
Through your G.S.R., you can make your group’s voice heard at district meetings, at area assemblies, and eventually at the General Service Conference.
The district committee member (D.C.M.) is an essential link between the group General Service Representative (G.S.R.s) and the area delegate to the General Service Conference. As leader of the district committee, made up of all G.S.R.s in the district, the D.C.M. is exposed to the group conscience of that district.
The main function of Area is to have a Delegate represent our Area’s conscience at the annual General Service Conference, where decisions are made that affect AA throughout the US & Canada. They form a local decision-making structure so groups can collectively decide on matters that affect their Area, County, and District. They carry out 12 Step work that would not be practical for groups to do by themselves.
